Some actions are too large to track as a single task. Subtasks let you break an action into smaller, concrete steps so you can track progress without losing sight of the bigger picture.
Adding Subtasks
Completing Subtasks
Open the Action and tick off each subtask as you finish it. The Action list shows a badge with the total subtask count next to the row so you can see at a glance which Actions have steps left to work through.
Subtasks are checked off individually, so you get a clear view of what remains even if the overall Action is still in progress.
Marking the Parent Action as Complete
When you mark a parent Action as Completed (or Won't Do), every subtask underneath is ticked automatically. This avoids the half-finished look of a closed Action sitting on top of three unchecked steps. The cascade only fires on the transition into a completion state, so if you tweak subtasks later on an already-completed Action, those edits stick.
When to Use Subtasks
Subtasks work best for actions that involve multiple distinct steps. For example, "Prepare Q3 budget proposal" might break down into gathering departmental figures, drafting the document, and getting sign-off.
If a task is straightforward and does not need breaking down, keep it as a single action. Over-splitting simple tasks adds clutter without adding clarity.
